The admission to the undergraduate programmes at the IITs and ISMU, Dhanbad is based on a two-tier test. The first test, JEE Main, is conducted by CBSE in April.
The second test, called the JEE (Advanced), is conducted in May (only offline). 2 lakh candidates of the top rankers in JEE (Main), which includes students from all categories (GE, OBC-NCL, SC and ST) are eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced).
Admissions to IITs is based only on category wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced) subject to the condition that you get more than 75% in their XII board exam or are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their Boards in applicable categories. SC, ST students should have 65% marks.
JEE (Main) Examination is conducted by the CBSE for admissions to B.E./B.Tech courses at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other participating institutes. For B.E./B.Tech, it is held in two modes- Pen & Paper Based and Computer Based. The Paper-1 of JEE (Main) is also an eligibility criteria for the JEE (Advanced), which you have to take if you are aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.
